Comparison: Fiber Laser vs. Plasma Cutting
- Power Consumption: Fiber lasers consume significantly less electricity than plasma cutters. A 1000W fiber laser operating at 380V draws approximately 2.6A, compared to a plasma source drawing 60A or more at 380V. This results in substantial energy savings. For instance, if a plasma cutter costs $1,000/month in electricity, a comparable fiber laser might cost around $26/month.
- Consumables: Plasma cutting requires frequent replacement of tips. A single fiber laser nozzle can process a large volume of material before replacement is needed. The high air pressure and electrode wear in plasma cutting necessitate more frequent downtime for maintenance and part replacement, impacting overall productivity.
- Cutting Speed: Fiber lasers achieve much higher working speeds. While initial cutting speeds might be similar, fiber lasers can accelerate significantly due to their lower center of gravity and compact design. This contrasts with plasma cutters, which often have taller torch assemblies and heavier structures, limiting their acceleration and speed.
- Sensor Technology: Fiber lasers feature superior head sensors with less electromagnetic interference compared to plasma cutters. Plasma’s high radiation can affect other electronic equipment, whereas fiber lasers operate with minimal interference, offering greater stability and reliability.
